Hair loss and thinning can affect both men and women alike. It is often part of the normal aging process but other factors such as stress, genetic predisposition, and alopecia areata can influence it as well.

PRF injections, when combined with Dr. Kenner's hair specialized products, can yield an even better result in terms of hair regrowth and regeneration. She is the only practitioner on the peninsula offering such a complete approach to hair loss. Call today to schedule your consultation for PRF.

What is PRF?

Our blood contains red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. When blood is drawn and then centrifuged (or spun in a special way), it will produce a substance called platelet-rich fibrin (PRF).
PRF is a fibrin matrix comprised of platelet cytokines, growth factors, and cells used to help promote skin rejuvenation, hair growth, and wound healing.

PRF can do many things including:
  • increase collagen production
  • regenerate tissue
  • rejuvenate the texture of the skin
  • improve hair regrowth
In addition to platelets, the white blood cells aid in tissue regeneration, and the fibrin acts as a scaffolding on which the growth factors attach to allow a longer release of their growth factors. Finally, stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can turn into specialized cells or become more stem cells. They act as a repair system for the body to replenish adult tissues.

How is it performed?

First, several vials of blood are drawn from your arm. It is then spun down (centerfuged) in special tubes in a unique way to activate the fibrin and concentrate more growth factors, white blood cells, and stem cells while separating it from the other blood components which are not needed. The PRF is then withdrawn from the vials and injected into the area of hair loss.

How many treatments are needed?

Typically, 6 consecutive treatments are needed, spaced 4-6 weeks apart, which is then followed by treatments every 3-4 months or so, to maintain the results. After a year, the treatment frequency can be reduced, based on the specific requirements of the patient. Like anything else, results can vary from person to person. A consult with one of our aesthetic nurses will be performed prior to starting treatments to personalize the treatment plan with the patient.

How is PRF different from PRP?

1. It contains more cells! PRF contains more platelets per mcL than PRP, and it also has leukocytes (WBC) & mesenchymal stem cells.

2. There is a fibrin scaffold. The fact that the plasma actually clots into fibrin allows for a much slower release of the growth factor and cytokines - meaning growth factors are kept alive longer and released for a longer period of time.

3. No anticoagulant! This allows for a 100% natural product.
